As teachers, we understand the trusted position we hold in society and we recognise the influence we have on learners, their understanding of the world and the future wellbeing of our society.
In New Zealand, we expect our teachers to have high standards of integrity, conduct, competence and effective teaching practice. When you teach in New Zealand, you’ll get regular professional learning and development opportunities, as well as an annual appraisal. This means that learners, their families, communities and the public can have the trust and confidence they expect in our teachers and the teaching profession.
The New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, the Māori-medium curriculum, aim to develop our young people as lifelong learners who are confident and creative, connected and actively involved. Although both curricula come from different perspectives, each starts with a vision of young people developing the competencies they need for study, work and lifelong learning, so they can go on to achieve their potential. And both allow teachers to be autonomous and creative in how the curricula are delivered.
