Getting Started with Talk Recruitment

How do I register with Talk Recruitment?

Go to talkrecruitment.co.nz and complete the online registration form. Once submitted, one of our consultants will be in touch to confirm your documentation: Police Vet check, qualifications, and references. After that, we match you to relief or permanent ECE roles in your area. The whole process usually takes a few days from registration to your first shift offer.

Is it free to register with Talk Recruitment?

Yes, registering with Talk Recruitment is completely free for teachers. There is no cost to sign up, no subscription fee, and no charge when you are placed in a role. Talk Recruitment is paid by the ECE centres we work with, not by the teachers on our register.

How long does it take to start getting work after I register?

Most teachers start receiving relief shift offers within their first week of completing registration. The timeline depends on how quickly your documentation comes through. Once your Police Vet check, qualifications, and references are confirmed, our consultants start matching you to shifts straight away.

Do I need to live in New Zealand to register?

Yes. Talk Recruitment works with ECE centres across New Zealand and places teachers in roles based in specific cities and regions. You need to have the right to work in New Zealand and be available to work in person at ECE centres.

Relief Teaching

How does ECE relief teaching work?

As a relief teacher, you set your available days and preferred locations, and Talk Recruitment matches you to shifts at ECE centres in your area. When a centre needs cover, we contact you. You are not locked into a fixed schedule. Take as many or as few shifts as suits you. Many relief teachers use it to build experience while keeping flexibility.

How much work can I expect as an ECE relief teacher?

This depends on your location, qualifications, and availability. Teachers in cities like Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch tend to get the most consistent work due to the density of centres. If you are available most days and willing to work across a few different suburbs, regular weekly work is realistic. Our consultants are upfront about expected demand in your area when you register.

Can I do ECE relief teaching while studying?

Yes. Many teachers on our register are working toward their ECE qualification while doing relief work. Unqualified teachers can work in ECE centres in roles that don't require a practising certificate. When you register, let us know your study situation and we'll match you to roles that suit where you are in your qualification.

Can I choose which ECE centres I work at?

You can tell us your preferred suburbs and centre types, and we do our best to match you accordingly. Over time, many relief teachers build regular relationships with a handful of centres they enjoy working at. If there is a specific centre you don't want to return to, just let your consultant know and we'll note that on your profile.

What's the difference between a relief teacher and a permanent teacher in ECE?

A relief teacher provides short-term cover when a centre's regular teachers are absent, on leave, or during busy periods. You work on a day-by-day or week-by-week basis with no ongoing commitment. A permanent teacher holds a contracted role with a set centre, with agreed hours, annual leave entitlements, and job security. Talk Recruitment places teachers in both types of roles.

Permanent Teaching Jobs

How does Talk Recruitment help me find a permanent ECE job?

When you register and indicate you're looking for permanent work, your consultant will discuss what you're after, including location, hours, centre type, and curriculum approach. We then match you with relevant openings in our network, some of which are not publicly advertised. We introduce you to the centre, manage the process, and support you through to offer and acceptance.

What permanent ECE roles does Talk Recruitment place teachers in?

We place teachers in permanent ECE roles at all levels: new-graduate positions, registered teacher roles, senior teacher positions, head teacher roles, and centre management. We work with both qualified and unqualified candidates, depending on the role requirements.

Are there permanent ECE jobs available in my city?

Permanent ECE positions come up regularly in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, and most other main centres. The best way to find out what is currently available in your area is to register with Talk Recruitment. Your consultant can give you a live view of open roles and upcoming vacancies in your city.

Does Talk Recruitment charge teachers a fee for permanent placement?

No. Talk Recruitment does not charge teachers any fees for permanent placement. Our service is free for teachers. The ECE centre pays a recruitment fee when a placement is made.

Qualifications and Requirements

What qualifications do I need to teach in ECE in New Zealand?

For registered teacher positions, you need a recognised ECE teaching qualification and a current or provisional Annual Practising Certificate (APC) from the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. Unqualified roles are available for people working toward their qualification. All teachers, regardless of qualification status, need a current Police Vet check to be placed by Talk Recruitment.

What is an APC and do I need one?

An Annual Practising Certificate (APC) is issued by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand and is required to work as a registered teacher in an ECE centre. If you hold a recognised ECE teaching qualification and are registered with the Teaching Council, you can apply for an APC. Provisional APCs are available for recently qualified teachers completing their induction and mentoring programme.

What is a Police Vet check and how do I get one?

A Police Vet check (also called a Police vetting check) is a background check required for anyone working with children in New Zealand. It is carried out through New Zealand Police and checks your criminal history. ECE centres are legally required to vet all staff. Talk Recruitment requires a current Police Vet before placing any teacher. Your consultant will explain how to apply if you don't already have one.

Can I work as an ECE teacher if I'm not yet qualified?

Yes. Unqualified teachers can work in ECE centres in positions that don't require a practising certificate. These roles count toward your practical hours if you are studying for your ECE qualification. You still need a Police Vet check, and centres must meet licensing ratios between qualified and unqualified staff. Talk Recruitment places unqualified teachers in both relief and permanent unqualified roles.

Are overseas ECE qualifications recognised in New Zealand?

Some overseas ECE qualifications are recognised by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, but the assessment process varies depending on your country and qualification. The Teaching Council has a qualification recognition process for overseas-trained teachers. Talk Recruitment can advise generally on this, but the formal assessment is done through the Teaching Council directly. If your qualification is not yet recognised, you may still be able to work in an unqualified role.

For ECE Centres

How does Talk Recruitment help ECE centres find relief teachers?

ECE centres contact us when they need relief cover, either in advance for planned absences or at short notice for unexpected ones. We match the request to a suitable, vetted teacher on our register and confirm the booking. Centres pay Talk Recruitment directly for the hours worked. There is no ongoing commitment required. Use us when you need to.

How quickly can Talk Recruitment find relief cover for my centre?

We aim to respond to same-day requests as quickly as possible, though availability depends on your location and timing. For planned leave, giving us as much notice as possible increases the chance of finding the right person. We maintain a register of teachers in each region and contact the best match for your request first.

How are Talk Recruitment's relief teachers vetted?

Every teacher on our register has been through Talk Recruitment's onboarding process. We verify their Police Vet or Ministry of Justice check, confirm their qualifications and Teaching Council registration (where applicable), and check their references before they are placed at any centre. You will not receive a teacher from us who has not been through this process.

Can Talk Recruitment help with permanent hiring as well as relief?

Yes. In addition to relief cover, Talk Recruitment can support your permanent teacher recruitment. We source candidates, match them to your requirements, manage the shortlisting process, and support you through to offer. Speak to our team about your current or upcoming permanent vacancies.

How much does it cost to use Talk Recruitment for relief staffing?

Relief teacher rates are based on the teacher's qualifications and experience, in line with ECE sector pay scales. Talk Recruitment's pricing for relief staffing is available on our pricing page or from your dedicated consultant. There are no lock-in contracts and no setup fees.

Pay and Rates

How much do ECE relief teachers get paid?

Relief teacher pay rates follow the ECE sector pay scales set out in the ECE Collective Agreements and industry standards. Qualified teachers with a current APC are paid at a higher rate than unqualified teachers. Talk Recruitment is transparent about pay rates when you register. Exact rates depend on your qualifications and experience.

How and when do relief teachers get paid?

Talk Recruitment processes pay on a regular weekly cycle. Teachers submit timesheets for the hours they have worked, and payment is processed through Talk's payroll system. Your consultant will confirm the pay schedule and timesheet process when you register.

Do I get paid for travel between ECE centres?

Travel between centres is generally not covered as part of the relief teaching rate. When you set your preferred locations, our consultants try to match you to shifts that minimise unnecessary travel. If you have concerns about travel expectations, raise them with your consultant when you register.

Primary and Secondary Teaching in New Zealand

Does Talk Recruitment place primary and secondary school teachers?

Yes. Talk Recruitment works with primary and secondary schools across New Zealand for both relief and permanent roles. We place teachers across full primary, contributing primary, intermediate, and secondary schools, alongside our ECE work.

How does relief teaching work for primary and secondary schools?

The process is the same as for ECE. You register with Talk, confirm your documentation (Police clearance, qualifications, Teaching Council registration), and we match you to relief shifts at schools in your preferred area. You set your availability and we contact you when there's a match at a school nearby.

What qualifications do I need to do relief teaching in NZ primary or secondary schools?

For registered teacher roles you need a recognised teaching qualification and a current or provisional APC from the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand. Some support roles are available for those working toward their qualification. All teachers need a current Police clearance regardless of qualification status.

Can Talk Recruitment help me find a permanent primary or secondary teaching role?

Yes. We place teachers in permanent roles at primary and secondary schools across New Zealand. Whether you're a new graduate or an experienced teacher looking for a change, our consultants can match you to schools that suit your subject speciality, year level preference, and location.

What subjects does Talk Recruitment recruit for in secondary schools?

We recruit across all secondary school subjects. Demand tends to be strongest for maths, science, te reo Maori, technology, and physical education, but we work across all curriculum areas. Let us know your subject speciality when you register and we'll match you accordingly.

Teaching in Australia

Does Talk Recruitment help NZ teachers find work in Australia?

Yes. Talk Recruitment places New Zealand ECE and primary and secondary teachers in permanent roles in Australia. We also work directly with Australian ECE centres and schools as clients, so we have connections on both sides. If you're considering moving across the Tasman, talk to our team about what's currently available.

What do I need to teach in Australia as a New Zealand teacher?

You need the right to work in Australia, most New Zealand citizens can do this under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement. You'll also need to register with the teacher registration authority in the Australian state you plan to work in, as each state has its own registration body and requirements. Talk Recruitment can guide you through what's needed based on where you want to go.

Do New Zealand ECE qualifications transfer to Australia?

New Zealand ECE qualifications are generally well-regarded in Australia, but recognition varies by state and qualification type. The Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) assesses ECE qualifications for those wanting to work in the early childhood sector. Talk Recruitment can advise on next steps and point you to the right assessment process for your situation.

Does Talk Recruitment charge NZ teachers a fee for Australian placements?

No. The service is free for candidates. Talk Recruitment is paid by the Australian centre or school when a placement is made.

Does Talk Recruitment help NZ teachers find work in the UK?

Yes. Talk Recruitment places New Zealand teachers in relief and permanent roles in the UK, across ECE and primary and secondary schools. Whether you're planning a working holiday or looking to relocate, we can connect you with opportunities there.

What do I need to teach in the UK as a New Zealand teacher?

For registered teaching roles, you'll need Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) recognition in England, or the equivalent in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. Talk Recruitment can walk you through the steps based on your qualifications and destination.

Can I do relief (supply) teaching in the UK?
